At a recent Wednesday night service, Pastor Tom spoke from John 7.  One of the verses stood out to me as particularly relevant for teachers.

Jesus said, “The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood” (7:18).

Jesus contrasts himself (who seeks the Father’s glory) with the religious leaders (who seek their own glory).  The key issue with the Pharisees, according to Jesus, is that they speak on their own authority.  This is a striking statement considering that they were considered “teachers of the Law” and regularly cited the Old Testament.  These men used God’s Word but spoke their own bright ideas instead of laboring to make God’s thoughts known.

Sadly, this same error is repeated today.  Many “Christian” teachers and preachers are quick to share their own novel thoughts and ideas, cloaking them in God’s Word so that they seem particularly profound.  Many such leaders have gained large followings and sold thousands of books off of their own bright ideas.  Yet they fail to wrestle with the text of the Bible so as to truly know God’s thoughts.

Please pray that God would continue to protect our church from such teaching and preaching.  Pray that your pastors and teachers would stand up each Sunday and Wednesday prepared to speak the very words of God, not their own ideas filtered through the lens of Scripture.  The health of our church depends upon it.
